Equatorial Guinea has dismissed Baltasar Ebang Engonga, Director General of the National Financial Investigation Agency (ANIF), following the discovery of about 400 explicit tapes documenting his interactions with prominent women in the country.

President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo reportedly issued Engonga’s removal through Decree No. 118/2024, dated November 4, citing “misconduct in office” and “family and social behaviour” incompatible with his position.

The scandal emerged after videos of Engonga with high-profile women, including some relatives, circulated online, igniting widespread debate on social media. Among the public figures condemning Engonga’s actions is Equatorial Guinea’s First Lady, Constancia Mangue Obiang. In a recent meeting with Prime Minister Manuel Osa Nsue, she expressed her concerns, highlighting the impact on the privacy and dignity of Equatoguinean women.

Through her Press Office on Facebook, Mrs. Obiang stressed the importance of proactive measures to protect women’s privacy and uphold gender equality, stating that government intervention is necessary to foster a safe environment and to respond effectively to issues impacting women in the digital era.
