A group of street beggars in Kano, Nigeria has urged the organizers of the ongoing nationwide protests to cease their activities for the sake of humanity.
The protests, which are part of the #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria movement, have significantly disrupted the lives of many, including those who depend on daily alms for survival.
Baba Haliru, a 70-year-old beggar from Rigiyar Zaki, shared his plight with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN). He explained that the protests have made it extremely difficult for beggars to earn their daily sustenance. “We have not eaten anything in our household of 14 for two days in the last four days except water,” Haliru lamented. He appealed for negotiations to end the protests, saying, “For God’s sake, please reach out to those who organized the protests to end them by negotiating with the government.”
Other beggars echoed Haliru’s sentiments, calling for an end to the protests and the lifting of the curfew. Malama Mario Kabiru of Hotoro quarters stated, “We have run out of foodstuffs and we can’t go out to buy more. We don’t have money, and the situation is unbearable.”
Malam Isa Musa of Dorayi quarters also appealed to the government to introduce measures to support elderly individuals without any means of livelihood.
