Renowned musician Elton John has shared a deeply personal health challenge, revealing that he has lost sight in one eye and has limited vision in the other due to a severe infection. The 77-year-old made the announcement during a gala performance of The Devil Wears Prada musical in London on Sunday, December 1, where he expressed gratitude to his husband, David Furnish, for unwavering support during his recovery.
“I haven’t been able to come to many of the previews because, as you know, I have lost my eyesight. So it’s hard for me to see it,” John said from the stage. “But I love to hear it, and, boy, it sounded good tonight.”
The Rocket Man singer first spoke about his vision problems in September when he disclosed that an infection he contracted in July in the south of France had left him with no sight in his right eye. Despite medical care, his recovery has been slow, leaving him unable to fully return to work.
Speaking to Good Morning America last week, John provided further details about his condition. “It’s been four months now since I haven’t been able to see, and my left eye is not the greatest,” he said. “There’s hope and encouragement that it will be okay, but… I’m kind of stuck at the moment. Going into the studio and recording, I don’t know, because I can’t see a lyric for a start.”
On Instagram in September, John updated fans, writing, “I am healing, but it’s an extremely slow process and will take some time before sight returns to the impacted eye. I’m feeling positive about the progress I’ve made so far.”
John retired from touring in 2023 but has remained active creatively, writing music for The Devil Wears Prada musical, which is based on Lauren Weisberger’s 2003 novel and the hit 2006 film adaptation.
Despite his health challenges, Elton John remains optimistic. “I’ve been quietly spending the summer recuperating at home,” he shared. “With the support of an excellent medical team and my family, I’m hopeful for the future.”
