Former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai failed to appear in court on the day his trial was scheduled to continue, leading the presiding judge to adjourn proceedings until April 23. El-Rufai’s absence came despite a court summons, and his lawyer informed the court that he was unavailable due to other official commitments.

The judge expressed displeasure with the absence and emphasised the importance of attendance in criminal proceedings, saying that trials can only proceed when defendants are present.

As a result, the next hearing date was fixed for April 23, giving the defence team additional time to prepare and for the accused to be present.

El-Rufai’s trial has drawn public attention because of the high profile of the former governor and the nature of the charges against him, which relate to alleged misconduct during his tenure in office.

Supporters and critics alike have continued to follow the case closely, with reactions divided over the implications of the delay.

Prosecutors said they were ready to proceed with their case but said the court’s decision would be respected.

Meanwhile, legal analysts noted that adjournments are common in complex trials, though repeated delays can prolong the judicial process and affect public perception of accountability and justice.
