Augustine Eguavoen has stepped down as the interim coach of the Nigerian national team, the Super Eagles, following a 0-0 draw against Rwanda in their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier, according to OwnGoalNigeria.

Eguavoen, who also serves as the technical director of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), stated that his mandate was limited to managing two games. “I have been given a mandate to handle two games,” he said at the Kigali Airport after the match.

Under his leadership, the Super Eagles secured a 3-0 victory against Benin Republic but failed to score against Rwanda on Tuesday. When asked about preparations for the next match against Libya, Eguavoen declined to comment, saying, “It ends today. I can’t talk about Libya because I haven’t been told about it.”

The NFF had appointed Eguavoen after efforts to hire a permanent head coach fell through. His brief tenure included two AFCON qualifiers, with mixed results for the Super Eagles.

The team’s next challenge will be to find a new coach before their next match as they continue their journey toward the 2025 AFCON tournament.
