The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has summoned the suspended chairmen of Edo State’s 18 local governments for questioning.
In a letter dated December 17, 2024, and addressed to the Secretary to the State Government, EFCC Director of Investigation Abdulkarim Chukkol requested the chairmen of Akoko-Edo, Egor, Esan Central, Esan North East, Esan South East, and Esan West to report to the EFCC office on Thursday, December 19.
Chairmen from Etsako Central, Etsako East, and Etsako West local governments are also expected on Thursday, while those from Igueben, Ikpoba Okha, Orhionmwon, Ovia North East, Ovia South West, Owan East, Owan West, and Uhunmwode are scheduled to appear on Friday, December 20.
The EFCC has requested certified copies of documents related to staff strength, payroll, and account details for funds allocated to salaries. These documents will be reviewed as part of an investigation prompted by the chairmen’s failure to submit financial statements, a directive issued by Governor Monday Okpebholo.
The suspension of the chairmen and vice chairmen by the Edo State House of Assembly on December 17 cited allegations of insubordination and misconduct. The EFCC’s investigation aligns with Section 38(1) and (2) of the EFCC (Establishment) Act, 2004.
