Operatives from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) conducted a dramatic raid on clubs and lounges in Akure, Ondo State’s capital, Nigeria on Saturday, June 8, 2024 arresting numerous individuals suspected of internet fraud. Among those apprehended was a groom-to-be who was celebrating his bachelor’s eve with friends.

The operation, which took place in the early hours, resulted in the arrest of over 50 individuals, as EFCC agents stormed several popular nightspots across the city. According to witnesses, the operatives fired gunshots into the air and used tear gas to control the crowd, creating a chaotic scene as they moved in.

“We were all having fun when we suddenly saw EFCC personnel entering the nightclubs. They tear-gassed everyone, beating them up and arresting them,” a witness recounted. “They don’t care who they are, as they shot tear gas canisters inside one of the clubs.”

In addition to the arrests, EFCC operatives seized vehicles, laptops, smartphones, and other items believed to be linked to fraudulent activities. A source close to the incident described the scene, saying, “They also went away with a groom and his friends at a club; he was there for his bash eve. It’s so sad as they profiled everyone as an internet fraudster.”

The EFCC, Nigeria’s foremost anti-graft agency, has ramped up its efforts to combat internet fraud, often targeting venues known to attract individuals involved in such activities. This latest raid highlights the agency’s aggressive approach to curbing cybercrime in the country.

As investigations continue, the EFCC has yet to release detailed statements regarding the specific charges or evidence against those arrested in the raid.
