The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has addressed reports concerning an alleged invasion of Urban Radio 94.5FM in Enugu by its operatives on Monday, October 14, 2024.

According to a statement released by EFCC Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale, the officers had gone to the station to invite Favour Ekoh, the host of Prime Time, in connection with a N700 million Ponzi scheme investigation but were obstructed and held within the premises.

Oyewale explained that Ekoh is being investigated for her involvement in the “Life Trading” scheme under Leverage Index Limited, which allegedly defrauded about 50 victims. The victims claimed that after investing their money, the company shut down without returning their principal or promised 10% returns. Ekoh reportedly invited the victims to invest and remained their only point of contact with the scheme.

Upon arriving at the radio station, the EFCC officers identified themselves and informed the general manager, Bamikole Omoyomi, of their mission. However, the station’s gates were locked, effectively trapping the officers inside. A rescue team was called, and Ekoh, Omoyomi, and two security guards were arrested for unlawful obstruction of the EFCC’s duties.

“The EFCC officers were not disrupting any live broadcast or arresting Ekoh on-air, as speculated,” the commission clarified, adding that the manager and security personnel were later released after providing statements.

The EFCC reaffirmed its commitment to the media but condemned the obstruction of law enforcement activities. It called on the International Press Institute (IPI) and the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) to investigate the radio station’s conduct in accordance with professional ethics and integrity.
