In a surprising turn of events, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Monday Okpebholo, emerged victorious in Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki’s home local government, Oredo, during the September 21, 2024 governorship election.

Obaseki had backed the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Asue Ighodalo, in the contest.

According to results declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Sunday, APC secured 30,780 votes, while PDP followed with 24,938 votes. Labour Party’s candidate, Olumide Akpata, garnered 5,389 votes.

The election, aimed at choosing a successor to Obaseki, whose tenure ends on November 12, 2024, is part of the off-season governorship elections in Nigeria. With 17 candidates in the race, the contest has been primarily viewed as a three-way battle between Okpebholo (APC), Ighodalo (PDP), and Akpata (Labour Party).
