The Edo State gubernatorial election witnessed high political tensions, as All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Monday Okpebholo, confidently asserted that the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) would not receive a single vote in his polling unit. Okpebholo, who cast his ballot at his home polling unit in Esan Central, expressed his confidence in the overwhelming support from his community.

Speaking shortly after voting, Okpebholo said, “PDP or whatever party will not get one vote here because this is my home, and my people love me. I have served them well, and they are proud of me. I have nothing to fear in my unit, we will deliver 100% for APC.” His statement reflects the fierce rivalry between the two leading parties, APC and PDP, as they contest one of the most closely watched elections in Edo State.

Meanwhile, the PDP candidate, Asue Ighodalo, raised concerns about logistical delays at his polling unit. Ighodalo, who is contesting for the governorship under the PDP banner, expressed frustration over the late arrival of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) officials at Ward 1, Polling Unit 3 in Ewohimi, Esan South-East Local Government Area.

Addressing the media after casting his vote, Ighodalo remarked, “It’s unfortunate that INEC officials arrived late despite the importance of this election. Many voters here have been waiting patiently, but we cannot allow this delay to disenfranchise them. I am calling for an extension of time to ensure that everyone here gets the chance to vote.”

The PDP candidate’s comments came as voters at several polling units across the state reported similar issues of delayed arrival of electoral materials and officials, sparking concerns about the smoothness of the electoral process.

Reports from the affected polling units indicated large crowds of voters eager to cast their ballots. Ighodalo stressed that INEC must take immediate action to prevent voter disenfranchisement, adding, “The people have come out in large numbers, and we must respect their commitment to the democratic process. I urge INEC to extend voting time here to accommodate everyone.”

As the election progresses, both candidates have shown confidence in securing victory. The APC, led by Okpebholo, remains optimistic about its chances in the central and northern parts of the state, while the PDP, represented by Ighodalo, hopes to maintain a stronghold in the southern and eastern regions.
