The Edo State House of Assembly in Nigeria has suspended all chairmen and vice chairmen of the state’s 18 local government councils for two months.
The legislative action, taken on Monday, empowers leaders of the councils’ legislative arms to oversee their respective local governments during the suspension period.
The suspension followed a petition from Governor Monday Okpebholo, who accused the chairmen of insubordination and gross misconduct for refusing to submit financial records to the state government.
The motion was moved by Isibor Adeh, representing Esan North-East 1, and seconded by Donald Okogbe, representing Akoko-Edo 2. After deliberation, 14 lawmakers voted in favor of the suspension, while six opposed.
