President Bola Tinubu of Nigeria reaffirmed ECOWAS’ commitment to upholding democratic values while protecting the welfare of citizens in Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso. During a state visit in Abuja with German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, Tinubu emphasized the importance of diplomacy and inclusivity in reintegrating the three nations into the regional body.
As ECOWAS Chairman, Tinubu noted the reluctance of the countries’ military leadership to establish clear transition timelines but stressed the importance of avoiding punitive measures that harm innocent citizens.
“We will not tolerate unconstitutional governance, but we must ensure that innocent citizens are not punished for actions beyond their control,” Tinubu said. He reassured that ECOWAS would continue diplomatic efforts while allowing free trade and movement in the region.
The German President lauded ECOWAS’ diplomatic approach and stressed the significance of reintegrating the nations for economic and security stability in West Africa. He urged ECOWAS to develop contingency plans for future economic collaborations while maintaining diplomatic pressure.
This dialogue underscores the broader international support for ECOWAS’ mission to promote democracy and stability in the region.
