The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has strongly dismissed claims that Nigeria and other member states are involved in sponsoring terrorism.

In a statement issued on Thursday, December 26, 2024, ECOWAS described the allegations as baseless, reaffirming its support for Nigeria’s peacekeeping efforts in the region. “The Commission stands firmly with Nigeria and other ECOWAS member states against allegations that they are sponsoring terrorism,” the statement read.

ECOWAS praised Nigeria for its leadership in regional security, particularly through the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF), which has been instrumental in combating terrorism and fostering peace across West Africa. The regional body commended Nigeria as a “generous and magnanimous country” dedicated to advancing peace and stability not only in West Africa but also across the African continent.

The Commission urged member states to prioritize constructive dialogue and refrain from making unsubstantiated accusations that could strain relations.

These statements come amid growing tensions between Nigeria and Niger Republic. Niger’s military leader, General Abdourahamane Tchiani, recently accused Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of collaborating with France to destabilize Niger. He alleged that Tinubu received financial incentives from France to allow French military activities in a specific area of Borno State.

Additionally, Nigerien authorities blamed the Lakurawa terrorist group, reportedly supported by foreign forces including Nigeria’s, for the December 13 attack on the Niger-Benin oil pipeline.

In response, Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs categorically denied these allegations, reaffirming its commitment to peaceful relations with Niger and neighboring countries.
