Rena Wakama, head coach of Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, has been named the Best Coach in the women’s basketball event at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
Wakama led D’Tigress to a historic quarterfinal finish, marking the first time an African team, male or female, reached this stage in Olympic basketball history. Under her guidance, the African champions secured a remarkable victory against world number three, Australia, and another impressive win against the world number five in their group stage matches.
Despite their outstanding performance, D’Tigress exited the tournament after a tough match against the USA in the quarterfinals. Wakama’s leadership throughout the competition has been widely celebrated, further solidifying her status as one of the top coaches in international women’s basketball.
