The Department of State Services (DSS) has granted administrative bail to Joe Ajaero, President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC). His release was announced by pro-democracy activist and African Action Congress presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, in a tweet on Monday night, describing it as a development under the “fascist regime” of the current government.

Ajaero had been detained earlier on Monday at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja while en route to the United Kingdom for an official engagement. His arrest sparked widespread condemnation from various civil society groups, activists, and organizations, including the NLC itself, which called the detention “brazen and illegal” and issued an ultimatum demanding his release by midnight.

The NLC, led by Deputy President Adeyanju Adewale, described Ajaero’s arrest as a violation of workers’ rights and democratic values, underscoring the strong backlash against his detention.
