Ladi Adebutu, the former governorship candidate of the Ogun State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has been released from the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS).
Adebutu was reportedly invited for questioning over allegations related to disturbances during the local government elections held in Ogun State last Saturday. His release was confirmed early Tuesday morning by his media aide, Afolabi Orekoya, during a phone conversation with Channels Television.
On Monday, the Publicity Secretary of the Ogun State PDP, Kayode Adebayo, had confirmed Adebutu’s detention at the DSS command in Abeokuta, the state capital. In a statement, Adebayo noted, “This is to inform members of our great party that our leader has truly been detained by the DSS for charges yet unknown. However, our principal has called for calm and assured supporters that this time shall pass. It is one of the prices for our democracy.”
Efforts to secure Adebutu’s bail on personal recognition or by a surety on Monday night were unsuccessful. His legal team has since been informed, and the matter is expected to be addressed promptly.
The PDP urged supporters and members of the public to remain peaceful and patient. “We want our people and the general public to be duly informed about his whereabouts and to maintain calm and peace until this matter is resolved,” the party stated.
Adebutu, who was the PDP’s governorship candidate in the 2023 election, remains a prominent figure in Ogun State politics. The DSS has yet to release details of the allegations or the outcome of the questioning.
