Grammy-winning Nigerian artist Burna Boy has addressed the viral altercation with a fan during his performance at the Greater Lagos Countdown 2025. The incident occurred when a fan breached security and rushed the stage, startling the artist mid-performance.
Footage of Burna Boy’s reaction, where he abruptly ended his set and left the stage, sparked mixed reactions on social media. Critics labeled the move as disrespectful, particularly since the event was held in Lagos and meant to celebrate the New Year.
In a statement shared on his Instagram story, Burna Boy defended his actions, citing personal safety concerns and his known aversion to fans jumping onstage. He wrote:
“It was a free show. I was supposed to do 10 mins and did almost an hour. Everybody knows my rule about getting on stage and startling me when I’m performing. I had an amazing time with Lagos state last night. Don’t jump on my stage like that. I got PTSD. I love you all. Happy New Year.”
The statement revealed his dedication to the audience, as he performed far beyond the agreed time, while also addressing the potential safety risks posed by such incidents.
The Greater Lagos Countdown, a signature New Year’s celebration, aims to promote entertainment and culture in the state. Despite the altercation, Burna Boy expressed his gratitude and well-wishes to fans, reaffirming his love for Lagos and its people.
