The Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Olayemi Cardoso, has urged Nigerian youths to remain in the country, emphasizing the ongoing reforms and policies aimed at fostering economic growth.
Speaking at the 59th annual Bankers’ Dinner of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN) in Lagos, Cardoso assured that the measures being implemented are in the best interest of Nigerians and the nation’s economic future.
“It is not a good idea to japa (relocate abroad) at this stage,” Cardoso stated. He highlighted two key reasons: first, that selling assets in desperation would allow external “predators” to take advantage of the undervalued market; second, the importance of contributing to the nation’s recovery and growth during this critical period.
Cardoso acknowledged the challenges brought by recent reforms but reassured Nigerians of their long-term benefits. He emphasized the need for collective effort from citizens, businesses, banks, and regulators to build a thriving economy.
“We are building an economy where every individual, every business, and every community can thrive. This vision requires all of us to work together with steadfast resolve,” he added.
The governor also noted increased international interest in Nigeria’s assets and urged citizens to seize the opportunities emerging in the local market. While recognizing the hardship caused by some policies, Cardoso maintained that they are aimed at addressing present challenges and securing a brighter economic future for all.
