In a devastating attack on a military base in Borno State, six Nigerian soldiers lost their lives during a raid by the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists.

The incident occurred on Sunday, January 4, 2025, in Sabon Gari village, Damboa Local Government Area.

According to reports, ISWAP fighters launched a pre-dawn attack on the base, arriving in trucks and on motorcycles.

The insurgents set fire to the base and army vehicles, engaging the troops in an intense gun battle.

Despite being initially caught off guard, the troops quickly regained control, with fighter jets deployed from Maiduguri striking the attackers as they retreated.

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) confirmed that 34 terrorists were killed, and 23 AK-47 weapons were recovered, along with over 200 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition.

The DHQ statement revealed that the terrorists had attempted to surprise the troops and retaliate against the recent killing of their commander and combatants.

However, the troops’ swift response and reinforcement from the Civilian Joint Taskforce, vigilantes, and hybrid forces thwarted the attack.

The Armed Forces reiterated their commitment to ending insurgency and terrorism in the nation, acknowledging the significant role they play in protecting the country.

This tragic incident is a stark reminder of the ongoing conflict in northern Nigeria, which has claimed over 40,000 lives and displaced around two million people since 2009. The region continues to grapple with the menace of jihadist groups, including Boko Haram and ISWAP.
