One of the lawyers representing human rights activist and author Dele Farotimi, Tope Temokun, has clarified that his client did not send Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, to plead with legal icon Afe Babalola over an ongoing defamation case.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Inside Sources program on Sunday, December 15, 2024, Temokun disclosed that Farotimi is resolute in his principles and adamantly denies any effort to seek an out-of-court settlement with Babalola.

Temokun revealed that Farotimi, who is currently in detention in Ado-Ekiti, stated unequivocally that he never authorized anyone to appeal to Babalola on his behalf.

“Mr. Dele Farotimi made it clear to me during my visit that he has not and will not ask anyone to beg or negotiate on his behalf. He expressed disappointment that anyone familiar with his principles would believe otherwise,” Temokun said.

Farotimi was arrested earlier this month in Lagos and transported to Ekiti State, where he is facing defamation charges linked to his book, Nigeria and Its Criminal Justice System. In the book, Farotimi accused Afe Babalola of influencing the judiciary and obtaining a revised Supreme Court judgment.

Farotimi pleaded not guilty to the charges and has been remanded in custody while legal proceedings continue. Similar charges have been filed against him in Abuja and Oyo State.

Temokun added that Farotimi remains in high spirits and optimistic about his defense across the various courts.

The controversy intensified after Peter Obi’s recent visit to Babalola and Farotimi, sparking rumors about potential negotiations. However, Temokun’s remarks affirm Farotimi’s determination to challenge the charges legally without resorting to compromises.

Farotimi’s bail hearing has been adjourned to December 20, while his legal team continues to prepare for a vigorous defense.
