Nigerian singer Davido is facing a lawsuit in a New York court over allegations of song theft and failing to pay a $45,000 debt. The lawsuit was filed by four Nigerian artists who claim Davido stole their 2022 song “Work” and used it to create his 2024 soundtrack “Strawberry on Ice.”
According to court documents, the plaintiffs gave Davido the demo of “Work” in January 2022 as part of a potential collaboration. However, they claim Davido took the song without permission and worked with another artist, Emmerson, to create “Strawberry on Ice.”
The plaintiffs allege that Davido agreed to pay $45,000 in settlement and royalties for the song, but failed to fulfill the terms of the agreement. They are seeking $150,000 in damages, transfer of copyrights, and a ban on further infringement.
The case is ongoing in the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York.
