Nigerian music star David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has retracted his earlier criticism of the Osun State Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Umar Abba, and commended his efforts in managing the security crisis in the state.
Earlier in the day, the singer had taken to social media to accuse the commissioner of disregarding the rule of law in response to the violent clashes over the takeover of local government councils. However, in a fresh statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), Davido acknowledged that his initial reaction was driven by emotions following the loss of lives in the crisis.
“In memories of the innocent souls lost, human emotions overwhelmed me and many of my friends around. We did not know the Commissioner of Police had been having sleepless nights alongside other commanders. At this point, the contributions of the police commissioner were not fully appreciated by me,” Davido wrote.
The singer praised the commissioner for his commitment to upholding the rule of law and called on security agencies to intensify efforts in maintaining peace, especially as Osun State prepares for local government elections on February 22, 2025.
“In memory of the dead and the injured, I urge the security agencies, including the Commissioner of Police, to redouble their efforts to sustain peace. We must allow the rule of law to prevail,” he added.
Davido’s statement marks a significant shift from his earlier stance, where he vowed to publicly call for the police chief’s removal. Now, he has expressed support for the commissioner and other security officials, urging them to ensure a peaceful electoral process.
