Afrobeats star Davido has sparked controversy following remarks he made on The Big Homies House podcast, where he advised Black Americans, particularly Nigerians, against relocating to Nigeria due to the country’s economic challenges.
Davido’s comments come amid concerns among African Americans about potential policies under U.S. President-elect Donald Trump that might not favor them. Speculations suggest some are considering relocating to Africa, including Nigeria.
“It is not cool back home. The economy is in shambles,” Davido said during the podcast, addressing the current state of the Nigerian economy.
Public Criticism
The statement has drawn sharp criticism from Nigerians, including notable figures who view his comments as unpatriotic and damaging to Nigeria’s image.
Joe Igbokwe, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), expressed his disappointment, urging Davido to retract his remarks.
“My in-law Davido has made me sad by telling the world in America that Nigeria’s economy is in shambles,” Igbokwe said on Facebook. “This is very sad. I will advise him to retract the statement asap. Nigeria made Davido. QED!!!”
Similarly, Bashir Ahmed, a former aide to ex-President Muhammadu Buhari, criticized Davido on X (formerly Twitter).
“Selling out your country from foreign soil is so disappointing and unpatriotic. Public figures like Davido should know that. They should act and be seen as good ambassadors for Nigeria wherever they find themselves,” Ahmed wrote, tagging the National Orientation Agency (@NOA_Nigeria).
Mixed Reactions
While Davido has faced backlash, some supporters argue that his comments reflect the harsh economic realities many Nigerians face daily. However, critics emphasize that influential figures should use their platforms to promote a positive image of the country, especially on international platforms.
Davido has yet to respond to the criticism or issue a retraction.
