Afrobeats superstar Davido has joined growing demands for the release of controversial social media activist Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan, who was arrested by the EFCC on Friday.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Davido praised the activist’s impact on ordinary Nigerians despite his frequent clashes with authorities. “Outside all the noise, it’s good to see that the good one does actually impacts lives and people actually appreciate! The support I’m seeing for VDM everywhere is encouraging… makes one want to do more for the masses. FREE MY GUY,” the singer wrote.
VeryDarkMan’s arrest has sparked mixed reactions online, with some netizens supporting his activism while others criticize his often controversial approach. Fellow musician Seun Kuti also weighed in, suggesting the activist’s arrest may be linked to his criticism of Nigerian religious institutions.
The EFCC has yet to disclose specific charges against VeryDarkMan, who previously faced legal troubles over his outspoken commentary on social and political issues. His detention continues to fuel debates about free speech and activist persecution in Nigeria.
