Hajiya Dada Yar’adua, the mother of Nigeria’s former President Umaru Yar’adua, has passed away. She died on Monday evening, September 2, 2024, at the Katsina Teaching Hospital.

Dada Yar’adua, often referred to as a matriarch of Nigerian politics, held a significant position within the country’s political landscape. She was the wife of Musa Yar’Adua, the Mutawallen Katsina and Minister of Lagos Affairs in Nigeria’s First Republic, and the mother of prominent political figures including Shehu Musa Yar’Adua, a key figure in the Obasanjo-led military government, and Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, a former President of Nigeria.

“She was not just a mother, but a pillar of political legacy,” a family member described, highlighting her role in supporting her family members who shaped Nigeria’s political journey.

Hajiya Dada Yar’adua is also the mother of Col. Abdulaziz Musa Yar’Adua, the current Mutawallen Katsina and Senator representing Katsina Central Senatorial District. Her grandson, Murtala Shehu Musa Yar’Adua, served as a minister under the Goodluck Jonathan administration. Additionally, three of her granddaughters are married to influential politicians in Nigeria.
