A Chief Magistrate Court in Iyaganku, Ibadan, has ordered the remand of three individuals in connection with a recent stampede at Islamic High School, Bashorun, Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria.
The suspects include Mr. Abdullahi Fasasi, the principal of the school; Alhaji Oriyomi Hamzat, proprietor of Agidigbo FM; and Naomi Silekunola, the estranged wife of the Ooni of Ife, Oba Enitan Adeyeye Ogunwusi.
The defendants were arraigned amidst tight security at the court presided over by Chief Magistrate Olabisi Ogunkanmi. The police prosecutor charged the trio with four counts, citing violations of Section 324 of the Criminal Code, Cap. 38, Vol. II, Laws of Oyo State of Nigeria, 2000.
The court premises were filled with relatives of the defendants and other concerned parties who gathered to witness the proceedings.
Magistrate Ogunkanmi ordered the suspects to be remanded at Agodi Correctional Center pending legal advice from the state prosecutor. The ruling marks the beginning of legal proceedings to address accountability for the stampede.
The stampede at Islamic High School left several individuals injured, raising concerns about safety and crowd control during the event. Investigations by the Oyo State Police Command led to the arrest of the suspects, who are now under judicial scrutiny.
The case will proceed once the state prosecutor provides further legal direction.
