A Magistrate Court in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State, Nigeria, has ordered the remand of human rights lawyer and activist, Dele Farotimi, in a correctional facility over allegations of defamation against renowned legal luminary Chief Afe Babalola.
The case centers on Farotimi’s book, Nigeria and Its Criminal Justice System, which reportedly contains statements deemed defamatory.
Presiding Magistrate Abayomi Adeosun gave the remand order after Farotimi’s arraignment by the police on a 16-count charge. The lawyer pleaded not guilty to all charges.
Police prosecutor Samson Osun requested Farotimi’s remand in custody, citing the need for further investigation. However, Farotimi’s counsel, Barrister Dayo Akeredolu, opposed the motion, urging the court to grant his client bail on liberal terms and self-recognizance. Akeredolu argued that the charges are bailable and emphasized that Farotimi is a prominent figure who poses no flight risk or threat.
Despite the defense’s appeal, Magistrate Adeosun denied the bail application, remanding Farotimi in custody and scheduling the case for continuation of hearing on December 10, 2024.
