Justice Obiora Egwuatu of the Federal High Court in Abuja has granted bail to 67 minors involved in the August 2024 #EndBadGovernance protests, with each minor required to post a bail of N10 million. The bail conditions stipulate that the minors, all under 15, must provide one surety who is a civil servant. The young protesters are part of a larger group of 76 individuals facing ten charges, including treason and conspiracy to destabilize Nigeria, under Sections 96 and 97 of the Penal Code Act.
The courtroom witnessed an emotional scene as a 15-year-old boy, among those detained, reportedly collapsed before the trial commenced. Lawyers quickly intervened, assisting the frail boy to the court’s clinic as his co-defendants looked on, many visibly shaken and in tears.
In addition, 87 adults involved in the protests are now also being arraigned on similar charges.
