Ushie Uguamaye - 1

National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member Ushie Uguamaye, popularly known as Raye, has issued an apology after sparking controversy with her remarks about Lagos in a viral video.

Uguamaye, who is currently serving in Lagos, faced backlash after criticizing the government and referring to Lagos as a “smelling state.” She also called President Bola Ahmed Tinubu a “terrible leader,” questioning the government’s commitment to addressing economic challenges.

Her comments triggered mixed reactions from the public, government officials, and the NYSC, with some condemning her for “talking down” on Lagos. However, in a statement on Instagram on Monday, she expressed regret over her choice of words, clarifying that she never intended to insult Lagos residents but was merely sharing her honest observations as a visitor.

“I want to first of all state that I am sorry to the people who were born and raised in Lagos State if you feel offended by what I said. I am sorry,” she wrote. “But as a visitor here, I could tell there was a difference in the atmosphere and quality of air here. If the way that I put it triggered your emotions and the love for your birth state, I am sorry. I didn’t mean to talk down on your birth state.”

She explained that her remarks were part of a 30-day rant challenge aimed at highlighting pressing societal issues. Her goal, she said, was to create awareness about Nigeria’s worsening economic conditions and inspire meaningful conversations.

Meanwhile, the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has condemned reported threats and intimidation against Uguamaye by the NYSC and some government officials. The organization, in a statement on X (formerly Twitter), called on the Tinubu administration to ensure her safety and uphold her right to free expression.

“Everyone has a right to criticize their government without fear of reprisals. Freedom of expression is a fundamental right. We’ll see in court if the threat is not immediately withdrawn,” SERAP stated.
