
In a deeply saddening announcement, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has confirmed the passing of Lt. General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja, the Chief of Army Staff, at the age of 56. The General passed away on Tuesday night in Lagos following a period of illness.
Lt. General Lagbaja, born on February 28, 1968, was appointed as Chief of Army Staff by President Tinubu on June 19, 2023. His distinguished career in the Nigerian Army spanned several decades, beginning when he enrolled in the Nigerian Defence Academy in 1987. He was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Nigerian Infantry Corps on September 19, 1992, as part of the 39th Regular Course.
Throughout his career, Lt. General Lagbaja demonstrated exceptional leadership and commitment, holding various key positions, including platoon commander in the 93 Battalion and the 72 Special Forces Battalion. His expertise was instrumental in several critical internal security operations, including Operation ZAKI in Benue State, Lafiya Dole in Borno, Udoka in Southeast Nigeria, and Operation Forest Sanity across Kaduna and Niger States.
A graduate of the U.S. Army War College, Lt. General Lagbaja earned a Master’s degree in Strategic Studies, further emphasizing his commitment to military excellence and professional development.
He is survived by his wife, Mariya, and their two children.
President Tinubu has extended his heartfelt condolences to the late General’s family and the Nigerian Armed Forces. He praised Lt. General Lagbaja for his unwavering dedication and invaluable contributions to the nation’s defense, wishing him eternal peace.
