Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has declared that Canada will strongly oppose any tariffs on steel imposed by the United States, calling them “entirely unjustified.”
Speaking at an artificial intelligence conference in Paris on Tuesday, Trudeau emphasized that Canada, as the US’s closest ally, would not accept such economic measures without firm resistance.
“Our response will be firm and clear,” Trudeau stated, adding that his government would engage with the US administration in the coming weeks to highlight the negative consequences of the tariffs on both Canadian and American industries.
Last month, US President Donald Trump followed through on his promise to impose a 25% tariff on steel and aluminum imports, despite warnings from Europe and China. Trump has also hinted at extending tariffs to automobiles, pharmaceuticals, and computer chips, raising concerns about escalating trade tensions.
Trudeau insisted that Canada would stand its ground, stressing the importance of fair trade relations between the two neighboring countries.
