Cameroon’s parliament has approved plans to introduce the position of vice president for the first time in decades under President Paul Biya’s administration.

The move comes through a constitutional amendment aimed at establishing a clear line of succession in the event of the president’s death, resignation, or incapacity.

Under the new arrangement, the vice president will be appointed by the president and will assume leadership if the office becomes vacant.

Officials say the reform is intended to ensure political stability and continuity of governance, particularly given the president’s long tenure in office.

However, critics argue that the move could concentrate more power in the presidency, raising concerns about democratic accountability.

The introduction of a vice president marks a significant shift in Cameroon’s political structure after decades without the role.
