British Airways has grounded its aircraft at Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, due to a technical issue, disrupting travel plans for many passengers.
British Airways grounded its flight BA 74, scheduled to depart from Lagos to London Heathrow at 10:50 p.m. on Wednesday, June 19, 2024, following the discovery of a technical fault. The issue led to the cancellation of the flight, causing significant inconvenience to passengers.
The airline’s Regional Commercial Manager for Nigeria and Ghana, Mrs. Tutu Otuyalo, addressed the situation on Friday, confirming that the carrier is actively working to assist affected passengers. “We would never operate a flight unless it is safe to do so,” Otuyalo emphasized, noting that passenger safety remains the airline’s top priority.
Otuyalo assured that British Airways would cover accommodation and meal expenses for those impacted by the disruption. “Most of the affected passengers have been re-accommodated on other flights. We have been in contact with our customers to apologize for the delay in their flight caused by a technical issue with the aircraft,” she stated.
Passengers unable to board alternative British Airways flights have been endorsed on other carriers, including Virgin Atlantic and Delta Airlines. This move aims to minimize inconvenience and ensure that travelers reach their destinations as swiftly as possible.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the technical problem, discovered shortly before the flight’s departure, necessitated the immediate grounding of the aircraft. Efforts to resolve the issue led to the rescheduling and eventual cancellation of the flight.
British Airways has expressed deep regret over the incident, reaffirming its commitment to passenger safety and efficient service. “We are working hard to book the remaining customers on a flight as soon as possible,” Otuyalo concluded.
