The Borno State Government, Nigeria has announced the closure of all public and private schools for two weeks due to severe flooding across the state.

The decision follows a visit to the Alo dam, a major water reservoir fed by sources from Lake Chad, which has suffered significant leakages due to heavy rainfall.

The announcement was made by the Ministry of Education, Science, Technology, and Innovation on Monday. Grema Bulama, the Acting Director of Schools Services, confirmed the closure and noted that the visit was led by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Bukar Tijjani, at the request of Governor Babagana Zulum to assess the dam’s condition. The Alo dam has been a significant water source and a recurrent cause of flooding in the state capital and surrounding areas.

This decision coincides with the recent resumption of the 2024/2025 academic session on September 9, 2024.

In a related development, both Edo and Kano States have also announced the indefinite closure of schools, albeit for different reasons, citing the recent surge in petrol prices.
