A bill to amend the 1999 Constitution for the creation of two new states, Oyo State and Ibadan State, has successfully passed its second reading in the House of Representatives. Sponsored by Akeem Adeyemi, son of the late Alafin Adeyemi, along with six other lawmakers, the bill aims to establish Oyo State with Oyo town as its capital and Ibadan State with Ibadan city as its capital.
During a plenary session on Tuesday, the bill garnered support and was subsequently referred to the Constitutional Review Committee for further legislative action. The proposed amendment includes the division of the existing 33 local governments, which would be allocated between the two new states.
This significant step could reshape the administrative landscape of Oyo State, reflecting ongoing discussions about state boundaries and governance in Nigeria.
