Barcelona has parted ways with coach Xavi Hernandez on Friday, May 24, 2024, after the team failed to secure any trophies this season, despite recent agreements suggesting he would stay in the post.

The decision comes just weeks after Xavi and club president Joan Laporta had reportedly agreed on his continuation as coach.

“Barcelona president Joan Laporta has told Xavi Hernandez he will not continue as coach for the 2024-25 season,” the club stated in a press release.

Former Bayern Munich and Germany coach Hansi Flick is strongly rumored to replace Xavi, with negotiations expected to unfold soon.

Xavi’s departure comes after a series of fluctuations in his future at the club. In January, he had announced his intention to leave at the end of the season. However, in April, after a promising streak of performances, he and Laporta reached an agreement for him to stay on as coach for the next campaign.

The situation took a turn when Laporta reportedly became displeased with Xavi’s remarks about the financial challenges Barcelona faces in competing with top European clubs.

“Barcelona want to thank Xavi for his work as coach…and wish him all the best in the future,” the club’s statement expressed.

As Barcelona looks ahead, details regarding the new coaching structure for the first team staff will be revealed soon.

Xavi’s tenure as coach had its ups and downs, with Barcelona failing to defend their La Liga title this season and facing early exits from other competitions. Despite Laporta’s initial support for Xavi, the president ultimately decided to part ways with the coach.

Xavi, a club legend, had expressed his dream of coaching Barcelona for years. However, the toll of the job on his mental well-being became apparent, leading to his departure.

Meanwhile, Hansi Flick, who led Bayern Munich to a treble in 2020, including a memorable 8-2 victory over Barcelona in the Champions League, is poised to step in as the new coach, pending official confirmation.
