Bangladesh’s army chief, Waker-Uz-Zaman, announced on Monday, August 5, 2024, the formation of an interim government following the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The Prime Minister fled the capital amid overwhelming protests.

“We will form an interim government,” Waker said during a national broadcast on state television.

The announcement comes in the wake of intense protests that saw demonstrators storm the Prime Minister’s palace. The political turmoil has escalated over the past few weeks, leading to violent clashes between police and activists of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement in the Shahbag area of Dhaka.

The army’s decision to step in and form an interim government marks a critical juncture for Bangladesh, as it seeks to stabilize the situation and restore order.

Further details about the interim government and the next steps in the political transition are expected to be provided later.
