Bandits have released Yakubu Dada, a retired civil servant who was abducted along with his youngest wife, Lami, on October 31, 2024, along Kontagora Road in Niger State. Dada was freed on June 2, 2025, after his family paid a total ransom of N30 million.
Initially, the kidnappers collected N10 million in November 2024 but later demanded an additional N20 million and four Bajaj motorcycles, threatening to kill Dada if their demands were not met. Tragically, in early May, the bandits killed Lami to pressure the family into meeting their demands.
Dada’s eldest wife, Maimuna, confirmed his release, stating that he was abandoned by the kidnappers near Kotonkoro in Mariga Local Government Area after the additional ransom was paid. She revealed that the family had sold nearly all their belongings—including their house, two cars, beds, and televisions—to raise the initial ransom. The payments were reportedly delivered in a forest in Kebbi State by Dada’s younger brother.
After receiving the first payment, the kidnappers initially demanded N60 million but later reduced their demand to N20 million and four motorcycles, an amount the family struggled to raise. While Dada’s release brings relief, the family continues to mourn the loss of his wife.
