Lagos’ upscale Banana Island was thrown into chaos yesterday as unidentified government agents abruptly sealed all entry and exit points to the elite enclave, causing massive traffic gridlock across Ikoyi and Lekki. The surprise lockdown, which trapped residents and visitors for hours, was reportedly connected to impending demolitions but has become shrouded in mystery as both state and federal agencies deny responsibility.

Eyewitnesses described scenes of frustration as armed personnel barred movement in and out of the island, with viral videos showing stranded motorists unable to access their homes. While speculation centered on the planned demolition of Banana Club House, Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) spokesperson Ademuyiwa Adu insisted: “Our men are not involved in this operation. Any demolition exercise would follow proper notification protocols.”

The incident comes just one week after the controversial Independence Bridge closure and follows Housing Minister Ahmed Dangiwa’s recent warning about reclaiming federal properties in prime Lagos locations. Despite the minister’s tough stance on land use violations, federal officials have remained silent about yesterday’s operation, leaving affected residents demanding answers about which authority ordered the lockdown and why.

As investigations continue, the Lagos State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to orderly urban development while distancing itself from the controversial gate closure. Traffic finally eased by evening, but the unexplained security operation has raised fresh concerns about property rights in Nigeria’s most exclusive neighborhood.
