At least 17 students have died after a fire broke out in a dormitory at Hillside Endarasha Primary School in Nyeri County, Kenya.

The fire, which began around midnight, quickly engulfed the wooden dormitory where more than 150 boys aged between 10 and 14 were sleeping. At least 13 students sustained serious burns.

Authorities, including Nyeri County Commissioner Pius Murugu, have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the blaze. In a statement, President William Ruto urged officials to “thoroughly investigate this horrific incident” and ensure accountability.

The school, which has 824 students, is located about 200 kilometers north of Nairobi. The Kenya Red Cross is providing psychological support to those affected by the tragedy. School fires are not uncommon in Kenya, with several incidents reported in recent years.
