Nigerian music stars Asake, Ayra Starr, and Odumodublvck have been nominated for the prestigious 2025 MOBO (Music of Black Origin) Awards, cementing Nigeria’s position as a global hub for musical excellence.

Asake and Ayra Starr are contenders for the coveted Best International Act award, competing alongside industry heavyweights such as Beyoncé, Kendrick Lamar, Nicki Minaj, and fellow Nigerian artist Tems. This category highlights artists making a significant impact on the global stage.

“Being recognized in the Best International Act category is a testament to the influence of Afrobeat and the incredible talent from Nigeria,” said a MOBO representative. “Artists like Asake and Ayra Starr are taking African music to new heights.”

Nigerian Artists Dominate Best African Music Act Category

The Best African Music Act category also boasts a strong Nigerian presence, with seven of the ten nominees hailing from the country. The list includes Asake, Ayra Starr, BNXN & Ruger, Rema, Shallipopi, and Odumodublvck. They are joined by Ghana’s King Promise and South Africa’s Tyla and Uncle Waffles.

Odumodublvck, known for his unique blend of Afrobeat and rap, expressed excitement about his nomination. “It’s an honor to represent Nigeria and be recognized for my music,” he said in a statement.

Central Cee Eyes Historic Win

In other categories, British rapper Central Cee is poised to make history. He could become the first artist to win the Best Male Act award three times, a feat currently matched only by Stormzy.

South African singer Tyla, who made waves by winning Best New Artist at the 2024 BET Awards, secured nominations in both the Best International Act and Best African Music Act categories.

A Night to Celebrate Black Music Excellence

The MOBO Awards, established to celebrate music of Black origin, continue to highlight the global impact of African and Black music. The 2025 ceremony promises to be a landmark event, with categories celebrating excellence across genres like hip-hop, grime, R&B, and jazz.

The full list of nominees underscores the growing recognition of African music’s influence worldwide. Winners will be unveiled at a grand ceremony later this year.

“It’s an exciting time for African artists on the global stage,” the MOBO representative added. “This year’s nominees are redefining what it means to be a global superstar.”
