Argentina has formally notified the United Nations of its decision to withdraw from the World Health Organization.

The move came after the South American country assessed its global health commitments and determined it would refocus its international health engagement through regional partnerships and bilateral agreements.

President Javier Milei’s administration said the decision reflects a desire to pursue more autonomous health policies and reduce dependency on multilateral institutions.

Government officials explained that Argentina will continue collaborating on international health issues outside the formal framework of the WHO.

The withdrawal is expected to take effect in July 2026, following a one‑year notification period mandated by WHO regulations.

The decision has sparked reactions from various health experts and civil society groups within Argentina, with some expressing concern about potential impacts on pandemic preparedness and access to global health resources.

Regional and international health stakeholders have also noted the development, urging continued cooperation despite the withdrawal.

The Argentine government maintained that it remains committed to global health objectives and will engage with other partners on shared health challenges.
