The All Progressives Congress (APC) has secured a decisive victory in the Benue State local government elections, winning all 23 chairmanship positions and 276 councillorship seats. The elections, held on Saturday, October 5, 2024, were conducted by the Benue State Independent Electoral Commission (BSIEC).

BSIEC Chairman, Mr. Richard Tombowua, announced the results on Sunday, October 6, 2024 at the commission’s headquarters in Makurdi, confirming that the APC achieved a clean sweep. Out of the eight political parties that initially expressed interest in contesting, only five—APC, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Social Democratic Party (SDP), Labour Party (LP), and All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA)—participated.

Tombowua praised the peaceful nature of the elections, noting that no major incidents were reported, except in Otukpo Local Government Area, where a BSIEC official was briefly held hostage but later released unharmed, thanks to police intervention.

While there were logistical challenges that delayed the announcement of results, Tombowua reiterated BSIEC’s commitment to delivering a free, fair, and credible election.

Reacting to the outcome, both the State Chairman of the Labour Party, Mr. Ibrahim Idoko, and the State Chairman of the APC, Mr. Benjamin Omale, commended the electoral body for conducting a peaceful and transparent election. Omale also thanked Governor Hyacinth Alia for ensuring a level playing field for all political parties involved.
