Amid escalating political tensions, the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State has called for a state of emergency, citing increasing unrest and instability under Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s administration.

During a press interaction in Port Harcourt, APC Caretaker Committee Chairman Tony Okocha attributed the state’s turmoil to Governor Fubara’s leadership. “We are at war in Rivers State,” Okocha declared. “Because the governor is unteachable, APC Rivers State is calling for a state of emergency so that you and I can have peace.”

This demand follows recent moves by Governor Fubara, who has mandated an audit of the accounts of the state’s 23 Local Government Areas over the past three years. The governor stated that the audit is a necessary step to ensure accountability and serve as a check for newly appointed officials.

“The current events are a product of democracy,” Governor Fubara remarked during the swearing-in of the new Caretaker Committee Chairmen at the Executive Council Chambers in Port Harcourt on Wednesday. He emphasized the importance of the new chairmen acting in the best interests of their communities.
The APC’s call for drastic measures coincides with internal political friction, including a controversial statement from former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi, who claimed that 84% of Nigerians are dissatisfied with President Bola Tinubu’s administration. Okocha distanced the party from Amaechi’s remarks, stressing that the APC remains focused on addressing local issues.
