The All Progressives Congress (APC) has defended President Bola Tinubu’s approach to national appointments, dismissing accusations of nepotism and asserting fairness in key governmental roles.
Felix Morka, spokesman for the APC, emphasized that Tinubu’s administration aims for equitable representation across Nigeria. Morka countered claims from northern critics who alleged regional bias in appointments, urging patience as more positions are yet to be filled.
“This government has only completed one year in office and has not exhausted all opportunities for appointments. Many key positions remain unfilled,” Morka stated. He highlighted the distribution of roles such as Defense, predominantly held by northerners, juxtaposed with the Minister of Finance and the Central Bank Governor from the southern region.
Addressing concerns about ethnic balance, Morka reiterated Tinubu’s commitment to national unity, stressing that the President represents all Nigerians under the principles of Federal Character enshrined in the constitution.
Regarding internal party disputes, particularly allegations from Senator Ali Ndume regarding party shielding, Morka advocated for utilizing APC’s internal mechanisms for resolution.
Recent criticisms of Tinubu’s appointments, labeled as skewed, have sparked debate, with calls for prioritizing competence echoing from various quarters. Former Kaduna Central Senator Shehu Sani cautioned against repeating perceived nepotism issues from previous administrations, urging a focus on effectiveness across governance sectors.
The ongoing discourse reflects broader concerns about governance and representation as Tinubu navigates his presidency amidst diverse expectations and challenges in Nigeria.
