According to U.S. media and government officials, four American educators from a small Iowa university were injured in a stabbing attack at a public park in northeast China’s Jilin province on Monday. Iowa Representative Adam Zabner confirmed that his brother, David Zabner, was among the victims, stating, “My brother, David Zabner, was wounded in the arm during a stabbing attack while visiting a temple in Jilin City, China.”

The incident occurred as the group was visiting a temple in Beishan Park when they were attacked by a man with a knife. The motive behind the attack remains unclear. Although a video circulated showing individuals lying on the ground covered in blood, Chinese social media did not feature the footage. Reuters identified the location based on specific characteristics in the video but could not verify its timing.

As of now, Chinese authorities have not issued any statements regarding the incident, and no reports have surfaced in Chinese media. Adam Zabner provided an update on his brother’s condition, mentioning, “I spoke to David a few minutes ago, he is recovering from his injuries and doing well. My family is incredibly grateful that David survived this attack.”

The educators, who are from Cornell College, were in Jilin City visiting a partner university, Beihua. Iowa’s Congress representative Mariannette Miller-Meeks expressed efforts to assist the victims, stating, “We are working through proper channels and requesting to speak with the U.S. Embassy on appropriate matters to ensure that the victims first receive quality care for their injuries and then get out of China in a medically feasible manner.”

Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds also addressed the situation, mentioning her contact with the U.S. State Department regarding the “horrifying” attack. College spokesperson Jen Visser informed CNN that the U.S. State Department is involved in the matter.
