The manslaughter trial of Alec Baldwin commenced on Tuesday, July 9, 2024, as jury selection started for the case involving the fatal 2021 shooting on the set of the Western movie “Rust.”

Baldwin, who was rehearsing a scene with a prop gun that discharged a live round, killing cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and injuring the film’s director, claims he was unaware the gun was loaded and did not pull the trigger. Prosecutors allege Baldwin acted recklessly on set and has inconsistently recounted the events.

Despite multiple attempts by Baldwin’s legal team to dismiss the case, it has moved forward. Baldwin, 66, attended a final pre-trial hearing on Monday, taking detailed notes.

Opening arguments are expected to begin on Wednesday, with the trial in New Mexico projected to last around 10 days. The case has drawn global attention due to Baldwin’s fame and the rare occurrence of an on-set death.

The incident happened nearly three years ago at the Bonanza Creek Ranch, where Baldwin was rehearsing a scene involving a Colt six-shooter. Baldwin contends he was directed by Hutchins to aim the gun in her direction and insists he did not pull the trigger. Live bullets are banned on movie sets, and Baldwin maintains it was not his duty to check the gun as an actor.

Special prosecutor Kari Morrissey has criticized Baldwin’s behavior on set, suggesting he lacked control and concern for those around him. If convicted, Baldwin could face up to 18 months in prison.

In a boost for Baldwin’s defense, the judge ruled that his additional role as a producer on “Rust” cannot be used to argue greater culpability. Despite this, prosecutors have secured a significant win by bringing the case to trial after overcoming multiple dismissal attempts.

The film’s armorer, Hannah Gutierrez, was earlier convicted of manslaughter and sentenced to 18 months in prison. Her trial highlighted basic gun safety violations that prosecutors are likely to use against Baldwin.

As the trial proceeds, Baldwin faces a critical juncture, with the potential for significant legal and personal repercussions.
