The Olugbon of Orile-Igbon in Surulere Local Government Area of Oyo State, Oba Olushola Alao, has reaffirmed the sacrosanct role of history, tradition, and culture in upholding the supremacy of the Alaafin stool. This declaration was made on Monday during a significant visit by the newly installed Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade, to the Olugbon’s palace in Orile-Igbon.

Oba Alao, while receiving the Alaafin and his entourage, stressed that history remains an indelible part of life, even in a rapidly changing world. He described the Alaafin stool as the most powerful and recognized traditional throne, whose influence extends beyond Oyo State and dates back to the era preceding the Oyo Empire.

According to the Olugbon, the Alaafin’s position is deeply cherished by the Yoruba people and others, and should not be taken for granted. He emphasized that the respect accorded to the Alaafin is rooted in centuries-old customs and traditions that continue to shape the identity and unity of the Yoruba race.

Addressing the delay in the reconstitution of the Oyo State Council of Obas and Chiefs, Oba Alao assured that efforts are underway to revive the council. He expressed confidence in the administration of Governor Seyi Makinde, noting that the governor is committed to ensuring the council, which has been inactive for several years, resumes its functions soon. The Olugbon revealed that discussions have been held with the governor regarding the council and that the challenges facing its reactivation are being addressed.

Oba Alao reiterated his support for Governor Makinde’s efforts to overcome obstacles hindering the council’s resuscitation. He expressed optimism that the council would be reconstituted and begin its activities before the end of the current administration, fostering peaceful coexistence among traditional rulers in the state.

The Olugbon also expressed his gratitude to Oba Owoade for selecting Orile-Igbon as the first stop on his tour of palaces. He pledged his unwavering support to strengthen the bond of unity between Orile-Igbon and the Oyo Kingdom, highlighting the importance of collaboration among traditional institutions.

In his response, the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Owoade, commended the Olugbon for his dedication to promoting and preserving Yoruba cultural heritage and history. He also thanked Oba Alao and other traditional rulers in Surulere Local Government Area for their warm reception and display of solidarity.

Oba Owoade pledged to uphold unity and harmonious coexistence among all traditional rulers in Oyo State and across Yorubaland, reinforcing the enduring legacy of the Alaafin stool and the collective responsibility of traditional leaders to safeguard Yoruba culture and values.
