The newly appointed Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Owoade, has commenced the mandatory 21-day traditional rites, known as Oro Ipebi, ahead of his official coronation.

A statement from his Chief of Staff, Rotimi Osuntola, confirmed that the rites began on Friday, March 7, and will conclude on Saturday, March 29, 2025.

As part of the ritual process, a daily curfew from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. has been imposed throughout Oyo town, restricting movement during these hours. According to Osuntola, anyone found violating the curfew will be detained until 7 a.m. the following day.

“The Oro Ipebi is a sacred and compulsory seclusion period for the incoming Ikú Bàbá Yèyé (Alaafin) and must be respected by all,” the statement read.

Following the completion of the rites, the coronation ceremony is scheduled to take place on Saturday, April 5, 2025, in Oyo town.
