The Alaafin-elect, Oba Akeem Owoade I, is set to complete the final phase of his traditional rites tonight at the Sango shrine in Koso, Oyo town, ahead of his official coronation.

A statement released on Friday by the Director of Media and Publicity to the Alaafin of Oyo, Bode Durojaiye, confirmed that the event marks the last stage of the Oro Ipebi rites, a crucial step in the ascension process of the Alaafin.

According to the statement, Oba Owoade will be accompanied to the shrine by the Oyo Mesi (the kingmakers), members of the royal family, traditional priests, village heads (Baales), and other residents.

“The royal father will spend the night at the shrine, where he will be adorned with the sacred Sango crown by Baba Mogba in the early hours of Saturday, officially becoming the 46th Alaafin of Oyo,” Durojaiye said.

Following this, all attendees, including the Oyo Mesi, will pay homage to the new monarch by prostrating and chanting Kabiyesi in recognition of his authority.

The official coronation ceremony is scheduled for April 5, 2025, at the open field of Oliveth Heights, Oyo.
